Cheap international calls without a contract

Rebtel exists for one common problem: calling a specific country often, without paying your home operator’s international rates and without signing a long contract. You buy credit or a plan, and the service routes the call over the internet or through a local access number, depending on what is cheapest in your situation.

The same app also sends mobile top-ups to phones abroad, which is useful if someone you are calling cannot easily buy credit themselves.

Open it, create the account, and make a purchase if you want the invite terms to take effect: Rebtel’s published invite-bonus terms describe credit for both sides after a qualifying purchase by the new user, and the qualifying amount is deliberately small.

Read the current terms for your country rather than a summary. Ineligible accounts, self-referrals, duplicate accounts and abusive patterns are excluded, and the provider can change the amounts and end the programme.

Credit, not cash

The distinction matters more than it sounds. Rebtel credit is spent on eligible services. It is not a deposit, it is not insured like a bank balance, and it usually cannot be withdrawn as money. Credit can also come with an expiry period.

Treat it as a discount on future calls and top-ups, not as a reward you will bank. If topping up a relative’s phone is your main use, work out the real cost of the calls you actually make rather than being led by the bonus.

What to check before you top up

1. Destination and rate: international calling rates vary enormously by country and by whether the number is mobile or fixed. Check the rate for your exact destination before loading credit.
2. Route: understand whether calls will go over data or a call-through number, since this affects quality, data use and sometimes cost.
3. Minimum and expiry: note the minimum top-up, how long credit lasts and whether it is consumed on calls, on top-ups, or only on a plan.
4. Recipient’s operator: mobile top-ups require the destination operator to be supported, and delivery is not always instant.
5. Refunds: prepaid credit is rarely refundable, so start with a small amount until you know the service works well for your country.

An honest comparison

Rebtel competes with messaging apps that are free when both people have data, and with travel eSIMs and local SIM cards when you are the one abroad.
